Equity benchmarks managed to close again at fresh record highs today. The 30-share Sensex rose 21.66 points or 0.06 per cent to end at a new peak of 36,161.64 today, while the Nifty50 index settled 2.30 points or 0.02 per cent up at a fresh record of 11,086.00 today. Out of total 50 stocks in Nifty, 28 settled in the green, whereas 22 remained in the red.
Key equity indices Nifty and Sensex ended flat in a volatile trade today, paring gains after scaling new peaks for a sixth consecutive session, as wary market participants chose to remain on the sidelines ahead of the expiry of January series futures and options (F&O) contracts. However, the market witnessed profit-booking in telecom, consumer durables, metals, capital goods and auto stocks amid mixed Asian cues.
The Nifty50 took a breather today, but managed to inch up to a fresh closing high, in a session marked by choppiness ahead of January series F&O expiry. The index rose for the sixth consecutive session and formed a small bullish candle on the daily chart. During the day, the index hit an all-time high of 11,100.10 before giving in. It managed to hold the 11,050 level, during the session and supports gradually shifted higher from last four weeks. Now, the index has to hold above 11,050 to extend its move towards 11,150 and 11,200 levels, while on the downside, major support exists at the psychological important 11,000 mark.
